Types of head and neck cancers
Head and neck cancers can be classified into several types based on their location and the type of cells involved. Here are the main types:
Squamous Cell Carcinoma: The most common type, often arising in the oral cavity, throat, or larynx. It originates from the squamous cells that line these areas.
Oral Cavity Cancer: This includes cancers of the lips, tongue, gums, inner lining of the cheeks, floor of the mouth, and hard palate.
Pharyngeal Cancer: This encompasses cancers of the oropharynx (middle part of the throat), nasopharynx (upper part), and hypopharynx (lower part).
Laryngeal Cancer: Cancer that occurs in the larynx or voice box, which can affect breathing and speaking.
Salivary Gland Cancer: These cancers can occur in the major salivary glands (like the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands) or minor salivary glands found throughout the mouth and throat.
Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinus Cancer: This includes cancers in the nasal cavity and the sinuses surrounding the nose.
Thyroid Cancer: While technically part of the neck, it is often grouped separately due to its distinct characteristics and treatments.
Soft Tissue Sarcomas: Rare cancers that can occur in the soft tissues of the head and neck, including muscles, fat, and connective tissues.
